There are two versions of the origin of the name of this shape: the first refers to a pasta maker who was inspired by the long, wavy hair of a young woman named Mafalda, while the second version is the most reliable, and the shape is named in honor of Queen Mafalda di Savoia (in fact, this pasta is also called "Reginette", "Little Queen").
Garofalo, a premium Italian pasta manufacturer, has been making high-quality pasta since 1789 in Gragnano, near Naples, the birthplace of pasta in Italy.
