Yorkie Chocolate evolved from a bar first launched under the name "York Chocolate" in 1924 as a single milk chocolate bar manufactured in York. < br>During the Second World War, York Chocolate was the only chocolate that Rowntree continued to produce, and was produced as a plain chocolate with added vitamins, sent to refugees in camps and supplied in soldiers' ration packs.
In 1966 York Chocolate was discontinued, but was relaunched ten years later under the brand name "Yorkie" in 1976. York Chocolate is still made in York's own factory, hence the name.
Yorkie started out as a chunky alternative to rival chocolate bars, promoted as the bar of choice for long-distance truck drivers in a television advert with the caption "Yorkie - Chunky Milk Chocolate".
Yorkie advertising continued its association with car travel, and tongue-in-cheek campaigns in the 1970s and 1980s and beyond have consistently positioned Yorkie as a men's chocolate brand.
